North Korea has remained a country inaccessible to most foreigners. Thus, this beautiful land has been almost completely unknown to non-Korean naturalists. Nevertheless, political relations between Poland and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea were fairly good and that is why that also the Polish Academy of Sciences could cooperate fruitfully with its North Korean counterpart for many year.

Our Institute's involvement in that country began in the early 1970s and, during succeeding twenty years, was orientated towards collecting animals, mainly insects and terrestrial vertebrates, in the field.
